Reflecting on the myth of Demeter and Persephone, Sliepenbeek considers the bond between a mother and daughter separated, yet eternally bound. Honouring the memory of the artist’s mother, the exhibition takes shape around a myth of loss and transformation, and the eternal rhythm of life.
When Persephone descends into the underworld, her mother Demeter, the Olympian goddess of the harvest, is overcome by grief, causing the earth to become barren. With Persephone’s return, the world begins to flower again.
You Sowed So Much I Can Bloom comprises a new series of sculptures and metal works, stemming from the artist’s residency at The Paddocks earlier in 2026.
Seeds, hands, and flowers, cast and hammered in metal, give form to grief and growth, exploring the invisible inheritances of love, protection and trust as fertile grounds. Placing a seed and trusting that, in time, it will take root.
